4A mixed bag - but overall good  Jun 28, 2008
iPhoto - Fabulous upgrade - the best and easiest way to manage and work with photos.
iMovie - Truly a disappointment. It could have been so much better, but bugs and terrible export quality from DV ruined the product.
iWeb - Not much of an upgrade, but welcome nonetheless.
iDVD - Worked fast and well when needed. Burns so quickly that it saved my skin on a couple occasions so overall very happy.
GarageBand - Minor upgrades, I don't really use it expect for podcasts so I don't notice much at all.

Overall, there is some good (iPhoto, iDVD) and some bad (iMovie), which overall means its a 4-star rating to upgrade.

4BEWARE !! the iDVD Program may not work  Jun 26, 2008
This iLife 08 application is probably great if you're running Leopard..... which I am not..... I have Tiger 10.4.11 ..... i purchased my new iMac desktop in October 07' and it came with Tiger and iLife 08 programs previously installed at the Apple factory. I recently went to use my iDVD program and it will simply not work at all..... Apple's Tech Reps have tried and tried to help me over the phone but nothing will make it work on my new computer.... I have spent hours and hours on this problem and finally one of the Apple Tech Reps admitted to me that iDVD 08 works best with the Leopard platform which it was basically designed for..... I have now ordered a new iLife 06 program for $79 plus tax, which they assure me will work fine on my 2007 computer..... If this is what it takes to get an iDVD program to work, then i think that I should not have to pay for the iLife application twice..... but I had to..... Apple has not heard the last from me about this issue..... we'll see....

1iMovie '08 Sinks the iLife Ship  Jun 26, 2008
One of the nicest things about the previous versions of iLife (up to iLife 6) was the ease of use combined with the seamless integration. It was a joy to use and so even though I tried Final Cut Express for movie editing, I went back to iMovie 06 because it was so productive.

I was a little disappointed, then, when I tried editing a movie in iMovie '08:
- There is no "rubber band" control over the sound levels
- The titles appear blurry if you edit them, and when I looked at an exported movie this morning the titles erase the film completely
- You cannot add chapters, unless you export to Garageband, but even then there is a bug whereby the sound is removed from the movie (but there is a hack to get around that) - doesn't this sound more like a PC than a Mac??
- All the controls seem to be automatic without the degree of customization that I seem to remember from iMovie 06.

In short, I debated whether or not to (a) switch back to the PC or (b) upgrade to Final Cut Express. I decided on the latter, but I hope Apple doesn't disappoint this badly again! At least the Mac hardware is on Intel, so I have options...

On the plus side, iPhoto seems much improved (nice Events groupings) although iDVD seems to have taken a little control away from the user (and it isn't as intuitive as I remember the 06 version to have been).

Overall... I'd stick with iLife '06 or upgrade everything (although they've taken away the DVD studio upgrade from iDVD - you have to buy the Final Cut Pro package at over $1000...).... or get a PC!

*** Update: Apple has a version of iMovie '06 for iLife '08 owners on their website (Google it to get the URL) - so you can install iMovie '06 which works great with iDVD '08. I also discovered that to get past the blurry titles on iMovie '08 you can split the titles up into shorter segments and it seems to fix itself - go figure. So now I am happy (at last!) with my iLife setup, and also I upgraded my Final Cut Express so now I have the option to go iMovie '06 or FCE for movie editing - if I can figure out how to use FCE!

5It runs well under OS 10.5.3  Jun 13, 2008
I got this version because my older version would not run under OS 10.5.3. It does that and runs flawlessly. I mostly wanted iDVD for a project but the other apps are nice to have. I've produced a DVD of pix I took at a family wedding which has been greatly appreciated by both sides of the family. I'm not into video but needed a way to have people look at the pix without a computer. It does that quite easily. I highly recommend it.

4I-life  Jun 05, 2008
Yes I was really pleased with the product and the shipping. The only problem I had was, when I was trying to get in touch with the company to see the details on my shipping and I could get in touch with the company of my other order but not this one but It was not a big deal but if it was I would not be very happy.
